Elite Group Builds School for Tsunami Victims

Yorkshire based logistics company The Elite Group has built a school in Sri Lanka to replace a school destroyed in the December 2004 tsunami (tidal wave) disaster.

Sajth Premadasa receives The Elite Group's donation to the people of Hambantota from Paul Walters.
Locals explore the new school.

The company paid for a building, playground equipment and annual salaries for a teacher and teaching assistant for the new school which is located in the Hambantota region 150 miles south of the capital Colombo. The school caters for up to 50 pre-school aged children and is of an open sided design with hall, stage, anterooms and outside play area. The opening ceremony was attended by a large crowd including the local member of parliament Sajith Premadasa.

The Elite Group (Elite Forwarders Limited and subsidiaries) employees over 600 staff in Leeds and provides full freight and logistics services to a range of large British retailers. The company has won several awards for its programme employing and supporting local long term employed people.

Quote from Stewart Firth, operations director for The Elite Group: "We do a lot of trade with Sri Lankan businesses and so are well aware of the awful impact the disaster has made on people's lives. It is great to be able to do something tangible to help them rebuild and return to a normal life."
