The principal and 14 students from Farnley Park Maths
and Computing College (http://www.farnleypark.leeds.sch.uk)
spent a day at The Elite Group headquarters in Wortley
in West Leeds looking at the real application of mathematics
in a modern logistics and warehousing business. Elite
staff demonstrated to the students how continuous
improvement techniques in the work place such as value
stream mapping and cell management could be used to
analyse business processes and break them down to
their basic mathematic time components. With this
information, business processes could be changed to
ensure any wasteful activity (in time or materials)
could be eliminated or reduced and the cost per unit
to Elite's customers could be minimised. Students
saw examples of Elite's mail order fulfilment and
retail replenishment storage and picking operations
in action where 1 million products are despatched
to customers every week. Specialist computer systems
are used at Elite to ensure staff need to walk the
minimum distance to perform tasks and stock is laid
out in the optimum position for frequency and volume.
The day was a great success with the students able
to witness maths in action. The Elite Group and Farnley
College are now planning a regular programme of visits
for other students at the school.
