The Leeds Award was launched in October
2007 and is for people who do charity or volunteer
work or give up time in their communities. Nominations
were received for a number of people, all having a
specific connection to Leeds. The leaders of the main
political parties in Leeds City Council then reduced
a short list down to just six people. These six were
then in turn endorsed by a meeting of the full council
earlier this week.
The winners were:
- Sir Jimmy Savile OBE, former radio and TV presenter,
for his services to charity
- Stanley Cundle, for his charitable work in Leeds
- Stewart Firth, for his support in recruiting local
people into employment in his firm and transforming
their lives
- Sheila Miller, for her work at St James Hospital
as a member of the chaplaincy and for her support
at St Gemma's Hospice
- Kim Milner, a fitness instructor who is dedicated
to assisting those over 50 to keep fit
- Dawn Newsome, for her work with youth groups and
who was nominated by school children
